Simon VinkenoogDuring the opening ceremony of the Hemp Gallery dutch Poet Laureate Simon Vinkenoog ( July 18, 1928 - July 12, 2009) accepted the Cannabis Culture Award 2008 from Ben Dronkers.  Many of his poems mention the cannabis plant and he was a lifelong advocate of cannabis legalization. His impassioned readings and performances stirred and inspired his audiences wherever he appeared. He was a contemporary of Allen Ginsburg and William Burroughs, with whom he performed at the International Poetry Incarnation at London’s Royal Albert Hall in front of 7000 people on June 11th, 1965.

Dr. Hans-Georg BehrIn 2009 Dr. Hans-Georg Behr received the Cannabis Culture Award. Dr. Hans-Georg Behr ( 1937 - 7 juli 2010) was a German psychiatrist, Green Party parliamentarian, history professor (University of Vienna) and owner of the world’s largest collection of antique cannabis smoking pipes. After his studies in Medicine, Clinical Psychology and Linguistics, Dr. Behr wrote features for magazines Die Zeit, Stern, Das Kursbuch and TransAtlantik. And he authored the books 'Weltmacht Droge' (World Power Drug: The Business of Addiction), 'Unsere Unterwelten' (Our Underworld), and 'Von Hanf ist die Rede: Kultur und Politik einer Droge' (Hemp is the Question: the Culture and Politics of a Drug), a work praised as the German counterpart to 'The Emperor Wears No Clothes'. Originally published in 1982, a completely revised edition came out in 1995.

Dries van AgtIn 2009 Dries van Agt received the Cannabis Culture Award. Dries van Agt was the Prime Minister of the Netherlands during three consecutive governments from 1977 to 1982 after becoming the first leader of the CDA (Christian Democratic Alliance). A controversial and charismatic politician, he was responsible for the tolerance policy (gedoogbeleid) which in 1976 divided ‘soft’ from ‘hard’ drugs. This act paved the way for cannabis decriminalization and the Dutch coffeeshop system. It also enabled more emphasis on, and resources for, the fight against the large scale hard drug trade.
